That peeling skin near your nail is very common, and from the photo it looks like a hangnail / dry cuticle, not something dangerous. Here are the most likely reasons 👇

Why this happens

  1. Dry skin
    • Cold weather, dry air, or lots of hand-washing strip natural oils.

  2. Frequent water or chemical exposure
    • Soap, hand sanitizer, cleaning products, acetone.

  3. Picking or biting
    • Even small pulling can lift the cuticle skin.

  4. Minor irritation or trauma
    • Typing, opening things, or small friction around the nail.

  5. Dehydration or low nutrients (sometimes)
    • Low water intake, low vitamins like B or iron can contribute, but dryness is the main cause.

What you can do (simple care)

  • Don’t pull it (this makes it worse).
  • Trim gently with clean nail clippers or cuticle scissors.
  • Moisturize 2–3× daily:
    • Thick hand cream
    • Cuticle oil
    • Petroleum jelly at night

  • Wear gloves when washing dishes or cleaning.
  • Apply ointment overnight and cover with a bandage if it keeps peeling.

When to watch out 🚩

Get it checked if you notice:

  • Redness spreading
  • Swelling
  • Pus
  • Increasing pain
  • Warmth or throbbing

Those can mean a localized infection (paronychia).

If you want, tell me:

  • Do you wash your hands a lot?
  • Use sanitizer often?
  • Bite or pick at cuticles
