At SVACA, we understand at times some owners need to make the very difficult decision to surrender their beloved companion animal. We are here to help explain surrender options for owners that they may not have realized existed.

We do ask that owners consider all options before submitting a request to surrender your animal to SVACA. When you surrender an animal to any shelter, the transition can be difficult as shelters can be stressful environments for even well-adjusted animals.

Please know that, despite our best efforts, we are not able to find new homes for all of the animals turned in to our shelter each year. This is why we ask you to examine every alternative available to you before considering surrendering your animal. Please consider the following options.

  • Consult a trainer or behaviorist for help with common behavioral problems.
  • Speak with your veterinarian to rule out possible medical issues.
  • Look for an alternate place to live that accepts companion animals.
  • Talk with friends or family to determine if they would be able to commit to taking care of your animal until circumstances change and you can care for your animal again.
  • Re-home your animal to a new home yourself. This transition will be much easier and allows you to have a personal investment in his or her new home. Our staff can also give you advice on the best way to find your animal a new home.
  • Contact local rescue groups to see if they can accept your animal into their program or help you in other ways.
  • Depending on your geographic location, contact your local animal shelter and inquire about their surrender services.

Please review the following advice.

  • It is illegal to abandon your companion in a park or countryside, assuming that she can take care of herself. Domesticated animals lack the skills to survive on their own and may die of starvation or injury.
  • It is illegal to abandon your animal in a house or apartment you are moving out of, thinking that someone will eventually find her.
  • Please DO NOT abandon your animal at an animal shelter when it is closed as it is not only illegal but also puts the animal at great risk.

If you have exhausted all options, Campbell, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Mountain View and Santa Clara residents may be able to surrender companion cats and dogs to SVACA’s Animal Care Center. We do require an owner surrender fee to offset the cost of caring for your animal. The fee for a dog or cat is $150.00. An additional $55.00 fee will also be charged for animals collected by staff in the field. To begin the process, please fill out an Animal Surrender Application if you meet qualifications.  An appointment will be scheduled so our staff can meet with owners and their animal to review all options. Please note that due to staffing availability, it may take up to two weeks for us to contact you.

While we cannot guarantee placement, we will make every effort to do so if we determine that we can accept your animal.

Deceased Animal Disposal Services

We also provide services for owned deceased animals from Campbell, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Mountain View and Santa Clara. Small animals are handled for a $25.00 fee; a dog, cat or rabbit for $50.00; and dogs over 150 pounds are $125.00. An additional $55.00 fee will also be charged for animals collected by staff in the field. Please contact us at staff@svaca.com for more information.
